US Forces Seize Tikrit

US tanks rolled into Tikrit's central square today, thus completing the capture of Saddam Hussein's home town, reports the Al-Jazeera television channel of Qatar. Tikrit is located 160 km north of Baghdad.

According to its sources, Cobra helicopters and F-15 warplanes bombed Saddam's Fedayeen and Arab volunteers for 12 consecutive hours. The air strikes stopped at about 7.00 a.m., with US choppers subsequently beginning to fly over that city's central districts.

Tikrit was surrounded by 250 US tanks April 13.
