Washington claims that Moscow does not fulfill the Geneva accords on Ukraine, but the Americans look awkward when it comes to requirements to present evidence. There are no US officials in the area of the conflict, so they rely on word of mouth from social networks.
"Washington knows best what is happening in Ukraine," US officials believe, trying to convince the world of the same. However, it appears the Americans have big problems when they try to prove Russia's interference in the conflict. They came to the point when even the State Department that has access to U.S. intelligence, refers to certain posts in social networks.
"What's your evidence and sources?" journalists asked State Department representative Jen Psaki after she said that it was not the Ukrainian army that attacked checkpoints in Slavyansk, but the protesters, about 70 people, who attacked the military men. According to her, the State Department has no specific sources, yet, the US officials are certain that their version of events is true, whereas the Russians say nothing but lies.
The State Department produced its own video for social networks. In the American version of the Ukrainian crisis, "Berkut" fighters enjoy nothing but delicious sandwiches rather than Molotov cocktails. "After months of peaceful protests, violent clashes rocked the city, entailing the deaths of at least 88 people. After two days of violence, the Ukrainian authorities agreed for a truce. But instead of executing the agreement, Yanukovych fled to Russia," say the authors of the video. It appears that for US officials, there were no acts committed to seize administrative buildings in Kiev, including the presidential administration. Yanukovych agreed to remove army units from the city, but the video says nothing about it either, vesti.ru reports.
Now, during the protests in southeastern Ukraine, Washington sees only gunmen and Russian agents. When the Kiev authorities sent army units against the civilian population, Washington officials said that it was a move to restore peace, law and order. Secretary of State John Kerry referred to the military operation in the south-east of Ukraine as an anti-terrorist operation, even though Washington preferred not to use Kiev's vocabulary.
Finally, Kerry again threatened Russia. "The window to change course is closing," Kerry said. "President Putin and Russia face a choice. If Russia chooses the path of de-escalation ... all of us will welcome it. But, if Russia does not, the world will make sure that the costs for Russia will only grow." This message was addressed to Moscow, but Kerry can not but understand that it is a call to Kiev to continue the war in the same spirit.
Meanwhile, Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, speaking during a live appearance on Russia 1 TV channel, noted that in the worst-case scenario in the south-east of Ukraine, Russia may resort to the resolution of the Federation Council to use military force.
"The Federation Council gave a mandate to the President of Russia on the use of armed forces on the territory of Ukraine, - the diplomat reminded. - This opportunity is always here in our hands. But, of course, we would not want to use it." He stressed out that the main goal at the moment is to de-escalate the conflict. This is what Russia wants most, he said.
Vitaly Churkin also said that if the violence in Ukraine does not stop, Russia will initiate an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. And although, according to the diplomat, there is a split in the council, one should not underestimate the significance of this institution. The legitimacy of the Security Council in the eyes of the international community remains very high, Churkin said.
The aggravation of the relationship between Russia and the USA that started unfolding during the presidency of Barack Obama has evolved into a real war during the arrival of Donald Trump. The United States has conducted a series of powerful attacks on Russia in the economic field. However, it is the EU that poses the biggest threat for the US
