From this Wednesday Russia stops import of beef from the USA due to the mad cow disease case in this country. This is an official statement from Russian Agriculture Minister Aleksey Gordeev.
“We were officially informed that in Washington a mad cow disease case occurred. This is why we had to temporarily block beef imports from the US”, explains Gordeev.
As it was told before, the first case of mad cow disease in the States was observed in Washington, DC. It was voiced on an urgent press conference of the US Agriculture Minister Ann Weneman. According to her, it’s only one cow that was identified.
She assured that situation is under full control, and authorities took all measure to ensure safety of products. She also underlined that “this case has no connections to terrorism”
“We’re still sure in our products’ safety”, she added and concluded with a promise to have beef on her Christmas table.
Danger of disease spreading is low, she noted, but from Tuesday public will be informed on situation around this.
McDonald’s was quick to claim its suppliers have no connections to the farm where the sick cow was identified.
The suspected cow was tested on the 9th of December. Specialists in Britain confirmed the results obtained in the States.
Agriculture Minister claims the cow’s meat wouldn’t appear in shops as she has been sick anyway.
Russia joins other countries who have blocked imports of American beef: Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia.
