Shareholders approve of Shire's purchase

Pharmaceutical maker Shire PLC announced that its shareholders approved the proposed acquisition of New River Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Shire offered US$64 (47.32 EUR) per share, or approximately US$2.6 billion (1.92 billion EUR), for New River in February.

"Consummation of the tender offer now remains subject only to certain customary conditions," the company said in a statement.

The tender offer will expire on Tuesday.

Shire shares gained 0.1 percent to 64.28 pence (US$1.27; 0.94 EUR) on the London Stock Exchange.
