A British soldier was killed Monday in Iraq, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The soldier, from 2nd Batallion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, was killed by small arms fire while on patrol in the Al Ashar district of central Basra, the ministry said.
It said the soldier, whose name has not been released, was providing cover for a Warrior armoured vehicle during a routine patrol.
No other soldiers were injured in the incident, the ministry said.
