India Launches Vaxi Flu-S Vaccine to Combat H1N1 Virus

Within one year of H1N1 virus surfacing in India, the country has launched indigenously made vaccine called Vaxi Flu-S to combat the virus. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has launched the vaccine on Thursday. The vaccine is manufactured by Zydus Cadila.

On this occasion, the minister said, “Post-Independence, this is the first influenza vaccine which has been indigenously made. The H1N1 made us think that we could not wait for importing vaccines, keeping in view the huge population. I am happy we achieved our goal on time.” Azad also got himself vaccinated with this single-dose vaccine, Fresh News reports.

WHO experts say that the virus remains a threat to some vulnerable people, notably pregnant women, young children and those with respiratory problems, and such groups would continue to need vaccinations.

WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said: “It is predicted that H1N1 will continue to be the primary or overwhelming virus among influenza viruses for quite a while, OnMedica informs.
