Suicide bomber kills U.S. soldier in Baghdad

A suicide bomber killed a U.S. soldier on a foot patrol southwest of Baghdad, while five other U.S. troops were reported killed in attacks elsewhere in Iraq.

The Task Force Marne soldier was killed Friday after the patrol approached two suspicious men for questioning near a mosque, and one of the suspects blew himself up, according to a statement. The military did not provide more details, saying the attack was under investigation. It initially said the soldier was killed Saturday but later corrected the date to Friday.

Elsewhere, a roadside bomb killed a Multi-National Division Baghdad soldier and wounded two others as they were conducting combat operations Saturday in western Baghdad, according to a statement.

A Task Force Lightning soldier also died of wounds sustained from an explosion that occurred Saturday near the soldier's vehicle during operations in Diyala province, a volatile area northeast of Baghdad, the military said separately. Two other soldiers were wounded in the attack.

A Task Force Marne soldier was killed Saturday by small-arms fire while patrolling south of Baghdad, the military added.

Two Task Force Lightning soldiers were killed when their patrol was hit by a roadside bomb Saturday during operations in the northern Ninevah province, the military said.

The soldiers' names were withheld pending notification of relatives.

The deaths raised to at least 3,485 members of the U.S. military who have died since the war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
