Russian rescuers try to save Czech tourists scaling Klyuchevskoi volcano

Rescuers have so far failed to reach the group of Czech tourists stuck about 4,000 meters up the Klyuchevskoi Volcano in Kamchatka, Russia's Far East. Earlier in the day, the local emergencies department received a signal saying one of the tourists scaling the mountain was down with a bad head injury.

According to a source in the emergencies department, the first attempt to reach the tourists failed when a helicopter sent out to fetch them could not land because of low clouds hanging over the mountain. Further on, more rescuers were dispatched to the area on a helicopter.

In the meantime, a source in the hospital of Klyuchi, a town in the vicinity of the mountain, said everything was ready to receive the injured tourist.

According to Russian rescuers, the group of tourists was accompanied only by a Czech guide who was unaware of the conditions and relief of the Kamchatkan Peninsula. No local guide had been called in.
