Pakistan Floods Hit 4.5 Million People

Pakistan's worst floods in eight decades surged into Punjab and Sindh provinces Thursday submerging villages and some urban centers after causing widespread devastation in the northwestern and central parts of the country.

Flood waters also entered Ghotki and Kashmore districts in Sindh province where thousands of Pakistanis live along the Sindh river banks because of the fertile soil of the river, officials said, RTTNews reports.

Devastating floods in Pakistan have affected an estimated 4.5 million people, UN officials said on Friday, as relief workers warned that the amount of aid needed was "absolutely daunting".

"The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates globally that 4.5 million people have been affected by the flooding," said UN spokesperson Elena Ponomareva, marking an increase of some 300 000 in a day, News24 reports.
