Starbucks store fined in London for being infested with mice

Coffee giant Starbucks was fined 12,000 pounds (US$23,000, Ђ18,000) on Wednesday after one of its cafes in London's swanky West End was found to be infested with mice.

An inspection of the store a year ago found mouse droppings near spoons, knives, cups, and boxes of cookies and coffee. Westminster Council decided to prosecute the store after an inspection of two storerooms and a serving area at the Villiers Street cafe raised alarm.

Starbucks, which has more than 530 stores in Britain, pleaded guilty to four counts of food safety and hygiene breaches, reports AP.

Several years ago, Prime Minister Tony Blair and Treasury chief Gordon Brown visited the cafe during a charm offensive because it has the kind of employee ownership scheme that their government was promoting.

The two had coffee and chatted to staff. Blair took a turn pouring coffee behind the counter.
