Russian border guards have confiscated four kilos of heroin on the Russo-Kazakh border. According to the Russian Federal Frontier Service (FFS), the drugs were found during an operation at a checkpoint in the Orenburg region. The operation was conducted by a border unit together with customs officers. The heroin was hidden behind the back seat of a bus, which was travelling from Kazakhstan to Russia. The driver and passengers of the bus have been detained. According to FFS data, the drugs situation in Kazakhstan remains difficult. The republic has an extensive raw material base for various drugs. Experts say that wild cannabis covers approximately 140 hectares in the Chu valley, the Dzhambul region of Kazakhstan. This is enough to manufacture 6,000 tons of marijuana per year. According to the Kazakh Interior Ministry, 90% of the marijuana and 85% of the hashish sold in Russia, has been produced in Kazakhstan.
