Iraq to Be Provided with Food During Next 4 Months

The Iraqi population will be provided with food under the UN World Food Programme during the next 4 months, the UN information centre in Moscow reported on Thursday.

It will be the greatest project aimed at providing the Iraqi 27-million population with food. The UN centre said that the project had been prepared during several months.

"We need safe conditions to successfully carry out the project. Unless the supremacy of law is not guaranteed, we won't be able to render humanitarian assistance (480,000 tons) to the people in need, a UN representative said.

He mentioned the looting of food storage facilities in Basra that will be used by the UN World Food Programme to distribute food in May. The UN representative said that it was impossible to work in such conditions.
