Coast Guard Vessel and Pleasure Boat Collide at Chirstmas Watercraft Parade, Boy Killed

A 33-foot Coast Guard vessel and a pleasure boat collided as a Christmas watercraft parade was going on in San Diego Bay, killing an 8-year-old boy and seriously injuring five people, authorities said.

There were no other injuries among the 13 people aboard the 24-foot pleasure boat in the 6 p.m. accident Sunday, Coast Guard spokeswoman Jetta Disco said. None of the five people aboard the Coast Guard patrol boat was hurt.

The injured were rushed to University of California, San Diego Hospital, where the boy was declared dead, said Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque, The Associated Press reports.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Jetta Disco says in a news release that one person from the civilian boat was declared dead Sunday night at University of California, San Diego Hospital.

San Diego Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque (LOO'-kay) says five others with serious injuries — all from the recreational boat — were taken to the same hospital.

Luque says all 13 people involved in the crash shortly before 6 p.m. have been accounted for. Coast Guard officials say no one from the patrol boat was injured.

A parade spokesman says neither of the two boats were involved in the parade, Mercury News reports.
