Danish soldier wounded in Afghanistan

A Danish soldier was wounded during an attack in southern Afghanistan.

The soldier, a member of a mechanized infantry company, was evacuated to the Danish base where he received medical treatment, the Army Operational Command said.

His condition was not known, the army said. No further details were immediately available.

The Danes currently operate in Upper Geresk Valley in Helmand province which has seen heavy fighting recently.

Denmark has some 600 troops in the volatile Helmand province.

Two Danes were killed Sept. 27 in Upper Geresk Valley. A probe has been launched to establish whether they were accidentally killed by friendly fire during an operation against Taliban fighters.

A total of six Danish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan.

A 24-year-old officer was killed in May, and three Danish explosives experts were killed in 2002 when they tried to defuse anti-aircraft missiles in the Afghan capital of Kabul.
