Strong Quake Kills 2 and Damages Dozens of Homes in Eastern Indonesia

At least two residents in northern Papua killed by the 7.1 magnitude quake this noon, and several buildings were damaged, local police reported.

According to officials, situation in the island is under control and residents gather at open space and fields to avoid more injuries.

The shallow quake centered just 10 kilometers below the ground; the meteorology agency reported about 123 kilometers south east of Biak, prompting the agency to issue tsunami warning, Tempo Interaktif reports.

The quake struck off the southeast coast of Yapen at 12:16 pm. It was the second of a series of strong tremors that were felt across a vast but sparsely populated region.

Yapen island, with a population of about 70,000 people, appeared to be the worst-hit area with one church destroyed and at least 150 homes damaged, police said, AFP reports.
