American F-16 crashes in northern Italy

A routine training mission turned into a crash for U.S. F-16 over northern Italy. The pilot is alive.

The crash occurred in a remote area northwest of Aviano Air Base, which is located near Venice, said a statement from the Air Force's 31st Fighter Wing. Italian carabinieri and emergency response teams, as well as Aviano Air Force personnel were at the site.

The pilot ejected safely and was at a hospital, the statement said.

No further details were available.
