As many as 16 crewmen of the craft that was in distress near the coast of Kamchatka ( a peninsula in the Russian Far East) were rescued.
As the Civil Defence and Emergency Situations Main Directorate of the Kamchatka Region reported, a helicopter carrying rescue workers and medics flew to help the people. All the 16 crewmen were taken on board the helicopter and brought to Ust Kamchatsk settlement.
The Kamchadal-2 scow (its port of registry is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky), belonging to the North-Eastern Company enterprise, was going to the Regional centre's port along Kamchatka's eastern coast. A gale threw it onto a shoal not far from Ust Kamchatsk settlement. The craft's list exceeded 15 degrees, and its electricity supply went out of operation.
Two people who tried to leave the craft on their own perished.
The Morning Star-1 trawler came to help the craft in distress but the rather rough sea prevented it from taking 16 people off the Kamchadal-2.
