Volcanoes became active in Kamchatka

An outburst of activity of Karymsky volcano has been registered in Kamchatka (a peninsula in the north-east of the Asian part of Russia).

As the staffers of the Kamchatka experimental-methodical seismologic party said, about 250 local surface earthquakes accompanied by gas and ash ejections to a height of up to 1,000 metres above the crater occurred in the area of the volcano's cone over less than 24 hours.

Karymsky is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. More than 20 eruptions of it occurred over the past 225 years.

Activity of Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano keeps growing, too. A glow in its crater has been observed since May 18th for the first time after the eruption in 1994, which testifies to the appearance of fresh lava. There is much ash in the vapour-gas ejections. The height of the ejections reaches 700 metres over the top.

The seismic stations register spasmodic volcanic movement. Series of strong earthquakes take place at a depth of 30 km under the central crater, and many weak surface earthquakes are also registered.

Klyuchevskoi is the highest active volcano of Asia and Europe (its height is 4,835 metres). The latest strongest eruptions of the top crater were observed between the years of 1978 and 1994.

The volcanoes do not breed danger to the populated areas of Kamchatka.
