Two trains collide south of Rome

Two passenger trains collided at a station south of Rome on Tuesday, injuring about 20 people, several of them critically, Italy's state railway and a hospital confirm.

A train traveling from Rome to Cassino stopped at the station in Roccasecca, about 130 kilometers south of the capital, said Luigi Irdi, a Trenitalia spokesman. Another train, headed from Rome to Campobasso on the same track, slammed into the first train from behind, he said.

The cause of the collision was under investigation.

Irdi said about 20 people were injured. A hospital said it had admitted about "five or six" people who were critically injured in the crash. Police in nearby Frosinone said that no one had been killed, but they could not release any more details.

Though most train accidents in Italy are minor, the country has occasionally seen deadly crashes, the AP reports.
