Teen boy injured by firecracker during soccer match in Brazil

The 11-year-old boy hit by a firecracker in a soccer match in northeastern Brazil last weekend died on Tuesday, local media reported.

Felipe Lima de Almeida had been hospitalized in serious condition since Sunday, when he was struck in the head by a firecracker in the match between Remo and Paysandu in the Para state championship.

Doctors said Almeida suffered severe head trauma when the firecracker exploded near him in the stands, Globo TV said.

Authorities said it was possible the firecracker was altered to have its power increased, Globo said, adding that police had in custody a suspect for setting it off.
