Gunmen with automatic weapons opened fire on a police cruiser and substation in this resort city Monday, wounding three officers.
The shootings occurred within 20 minutes of each other, beginning at 6:30 a.m. and both involved attackers in at least one Nissan sedan, according to Antonio Valenzuela, Acapulco's secretary of public safety and highways.
The first attack came at a police post in the city's La Cima district. According to a police report, 31-year-old officer Walter Sonda Castanon was hit and treated for a gunshot wound to the right wrist.
A short time later, the same group of gunmen fired dozens of times at a police vehicle parked in the town of El Quemado, outside Acapulco, injuring officers Omar Baylon Gomez and Esteban Dircio.
No arrests were made and motives for the attacks remained unclear Monday night. So far this year, eight police officers have been shot and killed in three separate attacks in Acapulco, AP reports.
