Four London bombers arrested in Birmingham

British police have arrested four men in the English city of Birmingham early this morning in connection with attempted bombings July 21.

A spokesman for the metropolitan police said one man was arrested during a police search of a home in England's second largest city of Birmingham, at 4:30 a.m (0330GMT). The man was shot with a stun gun during the search and police said they uncovered a suspect package which was being examined by explosives experts, the AP reports.

Three other men were arrested shortly after at another home in the city, about 190 kilometers (120 miles) northwest of London.

"The operations are in connection with the incidents in London on July 21," the spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity.

The spokesman told the first man arrested has been brought to the high-security Paddington Green police station in central London, while the other three were being held in custody in Birmingham.

The spokesman was quoted as saying by The Times: "A suspect package was found and, as a precautionary measure, evacuations have been undertaken in the vicinity and bomb disposal experts are in attendance."

Four bombs were planted on London Underground trains and a bus on July 21, but they failed to fully detonate.

The arrests came hours after the British government revealed that two of the suspected July 21 bombers were East African immigrants who had lived legally in Britain for more than a decade, CNN informs.

That background differs from those of the men who carried out lethal bombings two weeks earlier, three of whom were of Pakistani heritage and were born in Britain. The four July 7 bombers died in the attacks, along with 52 other people.
