Strong earthquake strikes southern Iran

41780.jpegA 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit southern Iran on Monday but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Iranian Seismological Centre reported that the quake hit at 11:22 GMT at a depth of 8 km (5 miles) in Konar Takhteh, west of the city of Shiraz. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.7 magnitude quake west of Shiraz, Reuters informs.

There have been no reports of casualties. The semi-official Mehr news agency says the quake shook the area for about 10 seconds.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake's strength at magnitude 5.7.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and on average experiences at least one slight earthquake a day, The Associated Press says.
