Record amount of heroin confiscated in Moscow region

The Interior Ministry's servicemen have confiscated a record amount of heroin in the Moscow region, Russian Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov told journalists on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district of the Moscow region, the police stopped a KAMAZ truck heading for Moscow. The driver was a citizen of Tajikistan. The check conducted together with the Federal Security Service representatives found a cache camouflaged as an additional petrol tank behind the driver's cabin. It contained 220 kg of pure heroin.

"It is the largest amount of heroin the ministry's servicemen have ever confiscated," the minister said. It equaled approximately 1,100,000 drug doses, he explained. "This saved about 500,000 people from becoming drug addicts," Gryzlov pointed out.

Another two Tajik citizens were detained in connection with the case, he added.
