Two &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/columnists/2002/04/15/27610.html ' target=_blank>suicide bombers blew themselves up in a crowd of Iraqi police south of the capital Monday, killing at least 25 and wounding 120.

U.S. troops detained the head of Iraq`s largest Sunni Muslim political party, stirring anger from the Iraqi government, which has struggled to woo him and other Sunnis into joining Iraq's fledgling democracy.

The bombers in Hillah, about 60 miles south of &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/mailbox/22/101/397/14569_tiger.html ' target=_blank>Baghdad, detonated explosives in a crowd of Iraqi police who had gathered to protest a government decision to disband their unit.

The bombing was the latest attack in a wave of violence that has killed more than 600 Iraqis since the announcement of the new government April 28. About 66 U.S. service members have died in May, making it the deadliest month for Americans since January, when more than 100 servicemembers died, tells the USA Today.

Also yesterday, U.S. forces mistakenly detained a Sunni political leader on the second day of an Iraqi-led security sweep in the capital.

The Iraqi aircraft carrying four U.S. personnel and one Iraqi crashed some time before noon during an operational mission, the military said in a statement, but it did not say what type of aircraft was involved or whether those on board died.
