Afghanistan: Two British jets damaged in Afghan rocket attack

Rockets fired at a U.S.-led coalition air base in southern Afghanistan damaged two British Harrier warplanes that were parked on the ground, a U.S military spokeswoman said Sunday.

No one was wounded in Friday's attack on Kandahar Airfield, said U.S. military spokeswoman Sgt. Marina Evans. Shrapnel from the rockets slammed into the jets inflicting "some damage but nothing major," she said. Briton has six Harriers based at the airfield near Kandahar city, a former Taliban stronghold.

The attack was believed to have been the first to damage war planes at the coalition's main air base in southern Afghanistan. The assault comes amid a major upsurge in fighting by Taliban-led that has left more than 1,400 people dead in the past half year, AP reports.
