A three-day conference on the restoration of the Afghan economy opens today in Islamabad under the aegis of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. Taking part in the conference will be more than 200 Afghan representatives as well as a number of foreign experts. They will discuss plans and ways of restoring the country's economy destroyed during the two decades of the civil war and the obtaining humanitarian situation. The experts believe that the most important problem at the initial stage will be the restoration of agriculture, which will improve the supply of foodstuffs and will give jobs and hence the means of subsistence to millions of peasants. The point at issue during the meeting will also be the restoration of the national education, health care, transport infrastructure and irrigation, as well as rural employment. The decisions to be made at the conference will have a form of recommendation and will be meant for the future Afghan leadership which may be created any time soon.
