Taiwan: Earthquake for Sunday

Fourteen people suffered minor injuries after a strong quake jolted Taiwan over the weekend, rescuers said Sunday.

The quake, which occurred at 9:02 pm (1302 GMT), was 25 kilometres (15 miles) southeast of Hualien, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Buildings were shaken for about 20 seconds as far away as the capital Taipei in the northern part of the island.

The quake was at a depth of 44.6 kilometres (27.7 miles) under the sea, according to the USGS.

Thirteen people were hospitalised after a chlorine leak at a hotel in east Taiwan's Hualien city, near the epicentre of the 6.4-magnitude quake that struck late Saturday, said the National Fire Agency.

Also in Hualien, one woman was lightly wounded by falling rocks and sought medical help, it said.

Minor incidents were reported in various parts of the island while two water tanks fell from roof tops, crushing cars in the capital Taipei without causing casualties.

The AFP has contributed to the report.
