Edward Snowden asks for political asylum in Russia

British citizen Sarah Harrison turned to the consular department of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport on behalf of Edward Snowden. The petition was filed on Sunday, officials said. Previously, the Russian Federal Migration Service denied reports saying that the ex-CIA agent had asked for asylum in the Russian Federation.

Representatives of the consular department of Sheremetyevo Airport on Sunday received an address from former U.S. intelligence officer Edward Snowden, who asked for political asylum in Russia, RIA Novosti said.

"Yesterday, at 22:30 MSK, British citizen Sarah Harrison, on behalf of Edward Snowden, addressed the consular office of Sheremetyevo with a request to grant him political asylum. I reported this to the management, and a courier package was then sent," said the source.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he had no information on the address of former U.S. intelligence officer Edward Snowden asking for political asylum in Russia.

Earlier Monday, Western media quoted an unnamed representative of Russian immigration authorities, who said that Edward Snowden had filed for political asylum in 15 countries, including Russia. The press service of the Federal Migration Service denied this information.
