Two nature preserves created in Far East

Two new protected nature territories on the reproduction and protection of wild animals' populations were created in the Khabarovsk region (Russia's Far East).

According to Alexander Kulikov, the chairman of the board of the Khabarovsk foundation of wild animals, the territories were called "Mali-Guado" and "Dunchike". Their documentation has been worked out as part of the project of the Global Ecological Foundation on the preservation of ecological systems of the Sikhote-Alin mountainous forests.

Professional hunters will be for the first time entrusted with the protection of the territories from poachers. They will be granted with cars and snowmobiles. Professional hunters will have a license for hunting fur-bearing animals and small northern ethnic groups, living in this region, - for hunting elks, Manchurian deer, roes and other hoofed animals.

The project of the Global Ecological Foundation also implies the creation of Khoso nature park and two nature monuments in Sikhote-Alin.

Protected nature territories total 6.2 per cent of the Khabarovsk region. By 2005 this area will total some 10 per cent.
