Tenerife: Diluvium

A freak Easter storm over the Canary Islands saw 225 litres of rain per square metre fall in just three hours.

The Spanish government is counting the cost after a weekend of freak weather conditions over the Canary Islands. Worst affected was the capital, Tenerife, where six people died, 50 are missing, 100 were injured and 50,000 left homeless. Three of those dead were killed as they tried to rescue others.

The Spanish Armed Forces are currently trying to normalise the situation in the regional capital and a commission is calculating the cost of the damages, estimated to be extremely high by the local government.
