A coordinated system to support for sports clubs in the Nizhny Novgorod region gave them an opportunity to take leading positions not only in Russia but also in Europe, Nizhny Novgorod region Governor Valery Shantsev said.
"For example, the "Nizhny Novgorod" basketball club, having won second place at VTB's United League, has performed well at the Euroleague this season. Female hockey club "SKIF" has repeatedly won the title of Russia's champion. This year, the club has won the European Cup. Volleyball club "Guberniya" has won the European Cup of the Unified Confederation," said Valery Shantsev, when making a report at a meeting of the Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under the chairmanship of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In total, there are eleven professional sports teams (three of them are women teams) on seven kinds of sport in the region. To solve the issue of financing, a regional law was adopted to provide tax benefits to the companies that give financial support to any of the regional sports clubs.
"I support the proposal that we should step aside from budget financing, although we do not have it. We should move away from it consciously and consistently, building sources of commercial funding," the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region said. "For example, we can take a look at the world practice of ticketing programs, when companies buy tickets to give them to their employees as reward and encouragement," Mr. Shantsev said.
In the Nizhny Novgorod region, sports and recreation complexes are being actively built. Twenty-seven of them are ready, whereas the program stipulates for the construction of 46 of such complexes.
