Australia: Illegal Immigrants On Rampage

Unsuccessful asylum seekers, whose visa applications had been rejected, burned down five immigration detention centers over the Christmas period.

Detention centers in Baxter, Villawood, Port Hedland, Woomera and the Christmas Island have been attacked. The damages exceed $4,000,000 (US). Inmates destroyed fire fighting equipment and attacked arriving fire crews. In addition, a group of armed asylum seekers attempted to occupy the Christmas Island detention center.

The Immigration Department issued a statement saying the situation has been brought under control.
