Pig races return to Russia

For the first time in 100 years, pig races will be held in Russia. The races will take place at the "Zoo Russia 2004" exhibition.

"The last time pig races were held was during the rule of Emperor Nicolas II. One of his daughters lost 200 rubles in a pig race," said Sergei Knyazev, the head of the Knyazev center.

There will be betting at the races and the money earned will go to the Ordyntsy Fund which helps rehabilitate children suffering locomotor system diseases.

Races will take place twice a day on March 20 and 21. Each race lasts for one hour. The champion will receive a cup and several kilograms of carrots.

According to the organizers of the races, all 15 pigs are preparing for the races at one of the Defense Ministry's farms outside Moscow.
