Yury Luzhkov: The rumours about my resignation are exaggerated

The Muscovites will be correctly informed about the coming elections of the Moscow City Duma. This decision was made by the Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov for there were rumours coming up that Luzhkov would resign, if the elections failed. Luzhkov to resign? This is nonsense, really.

The most interesting feature here is that these rumours were discussed at the session of the Moscow government today. The mayor declared that some media outlets had informed about a statement, which was allegedly released by the mayor in the “narrow circles.” The point of that statement was as follows: if the Muscovites were not going to the polls on the voting day, then Yury Luzhkov would quit his position.

“I do not want to comment on that nonsense,” – Luzhkov claimed at today’s session of the Moscow authorities. Luzhkov stressed it was a political provocation and the correct, saturated information about the forthcoming elections must be opposed to it.

It should be mentioned that this very political provocation is rather capable of attracting more attention to the elections, if you look at it from the point of view of the thought-out PR step of the Moscow administration. Furthermore, such promises among the Russian political elite have not yet been an obstacle to anything. Boris Yeltsin promised to lie down on the railing, but he was presumably lying at hospital instead.
