Russian Aluminum Oligarch Disagrees With Le Monde

Why doesn’t he threaten a lawsuit?
Russia’s company Basic Element, the holding company of aluminum oligarch Oleg Deripaska, declares the ungrounded and contradicting reality of the accusations published by Le Monde on November 27 and 28, 2002. The newspaper accuses Deripaska for illegal activities while establishing the company. The charges were declared ungrounded in a press release issued by Basic Element, where Oleg Deripaska is the chairman of the supervisory board.

As was stated in the press release, the publication in El Monde on the alleged connection of Oleg Deripaska with different criminal groups was quoted by Russia’s TV programs “Key Topic” and “Department X” on December 2 and 3, 2002. The company declares that this information contradicts reality. In particular, one of the authors of the Le Monde article, Vladimir Ivanidze, talked with one of the journalists who made the TV programs. He said that Oleg Deripaska was allegedly connected with the Izmailovo organized criminal group and that his company Russian Aluminum was criminally affiliated with the empire of “the Russian copper king,” Iskander Makhmudov.

In addition, a translation of the slanderous publication in Le Monde was published on the infamous website satcor.ru. Basic Element supposes that “the mixed group of Russian mass media through which the false information of Le Monde was spread proves that the action was wonderfully schemed and done by order.”

Summing up the above-mentioned facts, Basic Element reports that the information concerning Oleg Deripaska and the companies Russian Aluminum and Basic Element (it is mentioned as Siberian Aluminum in the Le Monde publication) published in the newspaper Le Monde signed by Vladimir Ivanidze and Sophie Shiab and reported in TV programs of Russia’s Third Channel and published on satcor.ru were lies. None of the facts mentioned in the materials are proven with official documents, the Basic Element press release reports.
