The European Commission opened a regional TACIS office in Nizhni Novgorod today. A Rosbalt correspondent was informed by the Russian office of the European Commission that the new office would provide local institutions and organizations with information about the TACIS programme and would try to involve local institutions in TACIS projects.

The new office is expected to work closely with the Nizhni Novgorod authorities. The office's area of activity will also include 11 other regions. The press office of the governor of the Nizhni Novgorod region told Rosbalt that Head of the EC Delegation to Russia Richard Wright, Presidential Plenipotentiary to the Privolzhsk Federal District Sergei Kirienko and Governor of the Nizhni Novgorod Region Gennady Khodyrev would open the office today.

There are already 7 TACIS offices in Russia: in Saint Petersburg, Petrazavodsk, Kaliningrad, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and Rostov on Don.

TACIS is an EU programme which helps to develop market economy and democracy in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia by giving free technical assistance in different spheres. More than EUR 2.4 billion has been allocated in the form of TACIS grants since 1991, which have given financial assistance to more than 1500 projects in Russia.
