Russian Defence Minister Doubts that Americans Succeeded in Doing Away with Saddam Hussein

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov agrees with the opinion of Washington that the anti-Saddam coalition forces have succeeded in overthrowing the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq and thus in achieving the objective of their military operation. He spoke about it during a conversation with reporters in Stockholm after meeting Swedish Defence Minister Leni Bjorklund.

At the same time, Sergei Ivanov said he doubted that the Iraqi leader himself was really killed. The Russian minister believes that the head of the Iraqi regime will sooner or later appear in one or another part of the world.

While referring to the situation in Iraq, Sergei Ivanov noted that the Americans had failed to achieve stability in that country. "There is no sense speaking about stability in Iraq," believes the minister. "As a matter of fact anarchy reigns there." He also said that at the present time "there exist different, sometimes even diametrically opposite, approaches to the strategy and tactics of the post-conflict settlement in Iraq." "However, Sergei Ivanov is convinced that "sooner or later this problem will be discussed in the United Nations."
