Brazil: Indians invade lands

500 Indians have invaded lands and have taken hostages in protest against the taking of their traditional possessions.

The group of 500 Brazilian Indians cut a motorway off in the state of Mato Grosso in Central Brazil and took eight hostages, six of whom are believed to be journalists.

The Indians are from eight different tribes, who demand more lands to cultivate and complain about the intrusion of state construction undertakings into their homelands.

The main problem is that the Indian population has grown in the last 100 years and the area of land destined for them has remained the same.
