Know-how Of the Russian Army

While Israel and the USA are developing systems to protect their countries from surface-to-air missiles, Russia, as it turned out, is developing a system that will not only protects against missiles, but also attracts missiles launched from a shoulder-mounted launchers
Israeli Minister of Defense Shaul Mofaz suggested an initiative that all Israeli civilian planes making flights abroad be equipped with anti-missile defense systems. A new threat to civil planes from surface-to-air missiles arose when terrorists in Kenya fired two surface-to-air missiles against an Israeli Boeing-757. There were 270 passengers and 10 crew members onboard the liner. Observers say that it is likely that Israeli civil planes will be equipped with anti-missile systems capable of automatically detecting missiles directed against civilian planes to use a strong heat ray to throw missile-guidance systems off course. Similar technologies were employed by Soviet pilots in Afghanistan more than ten years ago.

Concerning Israel, experts doubt that such a heat-ray anti-missile system or something similar will be installed on civilian planes in the nearest future. This equipment is very expensive; according to some estimates, it all the same cannot guarantee 100% safety of flights.

The USA also became very interested in the idea of equipping civilian planes with anti-missile systems. Right after the acts of terrorism in Kenya, a group of American senators appealed to President Bush to taking every possible measure to protect civilian planes from surface-to-air missiles. Senator Richard Shelby voiced the apprehensions of American senators: “There are thousands of surface-to-air missiles in the world. You can buy and transport them. This is one of the methods that terrorists use to deliver their blows.” The US Department of Transportation assures that it has already been working on the problem for several months together with law enforcement authorities.

While Israel and the USA are developing systems to protect their countries from surface-to-air missiles, Russia, as it turned out, is developing a system that will not only protects against missiles, but also attracts missiles launched from a shoulder-mounted launchers. This was stated by General-Colonel Nikolay Kormiltsev, the commander-in-chief of land forces, at a press conference today. In this connection, Nikolay Kormiltsev stressed that Commander of the Staff Anatoly Kvashnin took control of the investigation of how the Lipa anti-missile defense system had been adopted. He also said that soon, all army helicopters and Mi-8 freight helicopters would be equipped with new anti-missile defense systems, which have undergone successful tests.
