The Saudi Defence Minister has issued a statement making it clear that permission will not be given for the US bases in Saudi Arabia to be used in the event of an attack on Iraq.
Prince Saud made his statement on an official visit to Washington, stating that “Riyadh is against any attack on Iraq” because the UN weapons inspection team should follow up on the door left open by Baghdad when Saddam Hussein invited them to Iraq to see for themselves whether or not there were weapons of mass destruction.
However, Prince Saud said that the USA is welcome to continue to use the bases to keep Iraqi movements under observation and went on to say that the Iraqi people must decide upon whether or not they want a change of regime.
