- The authorities of the Kemerovo Region, in southern Siberia, have posthumously awarded to Yevgeny Knyazev, a Kemerovo native, a medal "For Special Contribution to the Development of Kuzbas" Third Class, for his rescue effort in New York, in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks on that city. Knyazev lived in the United States since 1992. As two hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center's twin towers, he was inside the building, performing his duties as a ventilation engineer. He led as many as 70 people out to safety. Shortly before the building collapsed, the elevator in which he was descending got stuck somewhere near the 91st floor. He was only able to report the fact to his wife over the mobile phone. The medal was handed over to Knyazev's mother on Monday.
