Manchester United manager has to pay for his statements
It has become known that the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) has instituted disciplinary proceedings against Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who doubted the honesty of the Champions League quarter-final draw. Several English newspapers cited the Scotch coach, who stated that the results of the draw had turned out to be very good for Italian and Spanish clubs.
"It was a nice draw for the Spanish and Italians; I think they picked it themselves. The three Italian teams have avoided each other and so have the three Spanish. How do you think that worked out?" Ferguson was quoted as saying in a report.
Ferguson believes that "The UEFA doesn't want us in the final, that's for sure. I don't know why they have given the final to Old Trafford, because they don't want us to get there." It is more than likely that Ferguson was very disappointed with the results of the match between Manchester United and Madrid Real. However, the coach has already apologized for his statements at a press conference on Monday, before the first quarter-final game between the two clubs.
Nevertheless, it seems that the UEFA cannot forgive the manager. According to the UEFA's disciplinary norms, national associations, as well as soccer players, referees and spokespersons, are supposed to behave according to the principles of loyalty and sports dignity. If someone's behavior or statements cast doubts on the reputation of soccer in general and of UEFA in particular, it is considered to be a violation of those principles.
Ferguson's case will be considered at a special meeting of the UEFA on May 1. Quarter-final games of the Champions League will be launched with matches between Real and Manchester United and Milan and Ajax.
