Vladivostok Unveils Monument To Anna Shchetinina, The World's First Woman Sea Captain

A monument to the world's first woman sea captain, Anna Shchetinina, was unveiled on Friday at the Naval Cemetery of Vladivostok, Russia's Far East. The life of Anna Ivanovna Shchetinina /1908-1999/, who became the world's first woman sea captain at 27, is an outstanding page in Russia's naval history. During World War II, Captain Shchetinina and other navigators took care of cargo deliveries from San Francisco under the lend-lease agreement with the USA. Hero of Socialist Labor Anna Shchetinina is also known as the author of a book called At Sea and Overseas. She spent many years lecturing and sharing her broad navigating experience in Leningrad and Vladivostok.

On December 10, 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, its thirty articles enshrining basic and fundamental rights guaranteeing dignity of the human person and equality for all, regardless of race, color, creed or gender. A pipe dream?
