Passenger train derails Yekaterinburg, Russia

Some people were injured but nobody killed when a passenger train derailed Tuesday in Russia, the Interfax news agency reported.

Nine cars of a train went off the tracks about 20 kilometers (12 miles) northwest of the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said.

He said he had no word on casualties. Interfax quoted a regional emergency official as saying that five of the nine cars overturned.

The news agency cited health officials in Yekaterinburg, as saying that three people were injured but none killed. Two people had arm or hand injuries and one apparently had a spinal injury.

The train was headed from Yekaterinburg, a major city 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow, to the town of Priobye, east of the Urals, Beltsov said.

Emergency officials in Yekaterinburg declined to comment.
