Magadan region fighting for digital equality

The Governor of the Magadan region, Vladimir Pecheny, believes that digital inequality should be eliminated as soon as possible. This issue is one of the main problems of the Kolyma territory. In the XXI century, the remote region of Russia suffers from the shortage of communication and Internet services. Operators believe that communication projects are unprofitable in the region. However, it is the progressive development of the region that is more important for authorities.

"State support to ensure the provision of high-speed Internet to Russian citizens is of paramount importance. Without such support, we will have places in the region, where people will be deprived of communication services. They will live under the conditions of digital inequality. They will not receive the amount of services that residents of capitals and big cities are used to, - Leonid Delitsyn, analyst at FINAM GLOBAL told Pravda.Ru. - Market will not be able to resolve these issues, because, in market terms, this is commercially unattractive. Accordingly, this is just the case, when the state should take care of citizens."

Communication services are needed in all areas. The head of the region has already obtained the support of President Vladimir Putin and Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov to improve infrastructure in the region.

"One should not leave anything to the mercy of market, of course, - Andrey Tumanov, first deputy chairman of the Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications told Pravda.Ru. - If you find profit somewhere, the state should stimulate you to taking up unprofitable projects for their development."

China's largest provider of communications solutions, Huawei, won the competition of Russia's Rostelecom for the construction of an underwater fiber optic link "Sakhalin-Magadan-Kamchatka." The cable of almost two thousand kilometers in length will run under the water. The route to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the bottom of the Sea of Okhotsk is four times shorter than the ground route. This makes it possible to quickly carry out the works to start providing communication services to residents of the Far East, so that they become closer to the rest of Russia and the whole world.
