Russian president's elections set for March 14, 2004

The Federation Council (Russian parliament's upper house) set the date for presidential elections for March 14, 2004.

142 members of the upper house voted for it, with no votes against or abstentions.

The Federation Council sets the date for the presidential elections in accordance with the Russian Constitution's article 102.

Speaking at the session, the house's constitutional committee chairman Yuri Sharandin said that in accordance with the federal law "On the Russian Federation President's Elections", the decision on setting the date for presidential elections must be taken not earlier than 100 days and not later than 90 days prior to the election day.

Presidential elections take place on the second Sunday of the month when previous presidential elections were held.

The previous presidential elections took place on March 26, 2000.
