Alykel, an airport situated between Norilsk and Dudinka, Taimyr Peninsula, has stopped receiving aircraft with above-wing engines. Specialists said the soil under the runway and taxitracks of the airport had sunk so low that the whole movement area was in critical condition. The entire infrastructure of the airport, which lies in a subarctic zone, went without repairs for two decades, even though its operational load noticeably increased in the recent years. Today, according to the airport's press service, Alykel rates among the country's ten airports with the largest freight turnover. It need be mentioned that air traffic is Taimyr's only way of communicating with the "outer world" between September and May.
