Palestinian proposal rejected at UN Conference on Children

A proposal by a joint delegation at the UN Extraordinary Session on Children was rejected by Israel and the United States of America.

The proposal for a resolution which will oblige Israel to protect children in the Palestinian Territories occupied by Israel was presented by a joint delegation of 22 countries comprised by Cuba, South Africa, Afghanistan and several Arab countries was denounced by Israel and the USA as an attempt to hijack the Conference.

The proposed resolution pointed out that many children caught up in these territories “are deprived of many basic rights” by the occupying Israeli force. Rashid Abdullah al Nuaimi, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, declared that “We would like to underline the fact that it is urgent in this Forum to offer immediate international protection to the Palestinian children and to guarantee their safety and well-being, like the other children in the world”.

The reaction from Israel and its supporter was swift. Richard Grenell, spokesperson for the US mission at the UNO admitted that his country was “encouraging the other countries not to allow that the special session on children be politicised and polarised by yet another debate on the Middle East”.

The Israeli Justice Minister, Meir Sheetrit, sneered that the Palestinians do not have any right to speak about children because they use them as suicide bombers.
