A group of 311 Ukrainian Army troops have fled into Russia amid fighting with anti-Fascist fighters at the Gukovo checkpoint, according to the Ukrainian security services. Other sources number the group at 438 and state they have defected to the Russian side.
The soldiers have been identified as belonging to the 72nd motorized brigade, and it is claimed that they ran out of ammunition and had to flee into Russia, whether as defectors or just to save their lives.
